Aw man, yeah I wish Ellusive got a placing too. They had so much variety in their dance. Good job to everyone who competed btw. Man, I didn’t even remember who came second and third in for the Varsity division :S
Oh shit sorry guys. Yeah Hood Dreams came 3rd. My bad. x
I finally found this forum. Been told about it a few times, couldn’t figure out where it was.
Good to hear all the constructive criticism. It’s been 8 yrs since I started GROOVE with a few mates in the hope of inspiring people and also help build the scene, and lo and behold – there’s a hiphop dance scene that arose from places where we started Groove here and abroad. It’s harder to connect now with dancers nowadays because I rarely get a chance to go around and meet each crew individually and personally like I used to, but from where we started and to see how far we’ve gone, man, it’s truly amazing.
The opportunity to do events and serve people is a blessing for us. I don’t know how people see it, but after an event, the money goes in and out to the next show, it rolls over because no govt body provides funding, and no sponsors give out money. it ain’t easy keeping everything under a budget, but we manage to do it. We fund our own shows pretty much the way how all the upstarts and new comps are doing. Many times we have been asked to increase our prices so that we can generate more, but it ain’t always about the money. Our passion to give people a chance to shine has always been our mantra. it hasn’t changed. We are bigger, coz we dream bigger – and make it happen.
I’ve passed on the torch to new management, and I’ve moved on to bigger projects, but it’s always good to look back and remember the people that have helped our organization, the crews that competed and supported our shows, and the fans and supporters that continue believing in us. We never forget where we came from.
What do I foresee? In this Aust & NZ dance scene, perhaps 5 yrs down the track, Id love to see them doing international shows and doing chory in Asia. There’s a bigger world in Asia. I’d also love to see a local crew win a medal in the World HipHop Championship in the USA, and what Jody mentioned before – hiphop musicals! That would be hectic.
Need more love in this hiphop dance scene, because all the hatin’ drags everyone down. Peace.

everyone was such a high standard but there were definitly some rankings that were way off. cmon judges! not everything has to be about blow ups and themes! take a look at the choreography! COME BACK ARCH!!
congratulations to all crews that made it through to battlegrounds! thumbs up to the comment above, it seems that judges have based their rankings on crews with mainly blowups and tricks this year. what about all the hard work put into choreography.
overall well done to everyone, it was a great show! really looking forward to the next groove seems like the crew expectations is just going to get higher and higher! and hopefully the judging will be better
Hi wat is up with the rankings!,
Everyone has a difference of opinion so you are entitled to yours but to state a general ranking from top to bottom is just plain rude. Hollabak came third and we know we deserved our place so to see somebody come in and change the entire rankings for their benefit is insulting. The crews that you placed in first in Varsity and 1st and 2nd in Open are still the same crews that are going to Battlegrounds so what does it matter??? Hence the major crew’s that you took away 2nd or 3rd placings are Destruct and Hollabak. Straight up we deserved our spot. State an opinion but be careful who you insult along the way. The crews that did place 1st, 2nd and 3rd were crews that didn’t have any major blow ups and were about the choreography. Please don’t hate it just brings it down for all of us.
We all have opinions about judges – and Arch is my favourite too but please don’t do it by insulting the crews. Hoopdreamz are always open to feedback back so respectively provide your opinion to the organisers not to the rest of us that worked hard to get what we earned.
Peace
RELAX GUYS!
yes “what is up with the rankings” probably took it too far, but robot girl as you said each person has an opinion… respect it, fighting back isn’t going to do anything, their opinion stays the same, and isn’t going to take your placing away. whats done is done. good luck for bg.. killll it!
poice
Hey Nuggets,
I read these forums a lot without giving an opinion and quite often people don’t like to put their real names and throw around opinions that directly insult crews. So to see an entire ranking done as if qualified to judge is insulting and insulting to Detour who came first. I ain’t fighting back just have a voice that is also allowed to be heard. And as a person who has committed both personally and professionally to this hip hop dance scene (Hip Hop events is what I do for a living and teach) I will let somebody know when they have taken things too far. Yes what done is done and we are going to Battlegrounds (Wildcard) so thankyou Nuggets we will do our best to represent MelBurn.
Peace and holla!!
why are most of the judges jazz dancers? I thought it was a hip hop competition theres nothing hip hop about groove
congrats everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HOLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
GO REMORSE CREW. WHOOP WHOOP!!!!!!
REMORSE CREW(wild card) YEH SO STOKED….GO BOYS, RIP IT UP!!!!
Congrats Remorse!!!! Hollabak got Wildcard too!!! Whoohoo!! Battlegrounds is heating up!! What, what!!!
Holla!!!!!!!
Congrats to all the crews that made it through- qualifying and wildcards, as it is such a wonderful opportunity . On a sour note please don’t state who was deserving and who wasn’t because there were a lot of crews that night that were just as deserving of a place at Battlegrounds. Some crews might feel validated by those judges sitting on that panel but now you have to take it to the next level and prove your crew on an international stage. On top of that I feel that respect among the community is sometimes better than a judges approval… There is no respect for ABC chore, it’s lazy and an insult to the choreographers that actually take time to plan every single second of their routine and the dancers that have to practice the precision and develop the skills to execute it.
I love the passion that everyone brings to the table when it comes to comps, especially to this type of forum… opinions are just that, opinions…everyone is entitled to their own, and it will always have a following or detractors. The point of the fact is, you just have to figure out where that opinion is coming from…
I would most likely listen to an opinion that has 15-20 year dance and entertainment background and experience backing it up, rather than listening to a passing opinion from someone who has nothing but negativity or beef towards crews, competitions, or event coordinators. It’s just counter productive.
And respect to the judges especially to Daz Inkster who was part of Arch Ilias’ Wickid Force crew… Arch was the one who actually referred us to Daz Inkster, so please consider that.
Please don’t hate… congratulate!
Congratulations again to the wildcards that’s going to WSB to represent Melbourne!!
Stop complaining and back your Melbourne team and support them on Nov 29!! We worked hard to have Battlegrounds down in Melbourne again, so don’t let the Burn City crews down!!
One Love – Oliver
congratz on the wildcard Hollabak, and big ups to Detour
you’s ripped hard man !!
lets make melbourne proud aye!
ohhh and for the haterz !!
YOU’S ONLY HATE ON THE SUCCESS OF OTHERZ !!
so haterz keep hatin’ coz your just making our success grow !
REMORSE UP !!
CHEA !!! deuces ~~~
WHo are the varsityyyyyyyyyy melb wild cards?
This isn’t a hating fest, this is the truth- we are in Melbourne these crews are representing us at a world level. We want the strongest and the best. The judges we have here in Melbourne have the skills and qualifications to judge dancing we know that but do they really know what cuts it internationally? Do they keep current with styles and who is leading the way around the world when it comes to hip hop crews? doubt they do. That isn’t Hoopdreamz fault for their decision in choosing them it is their personal duty to keep current so they can judge on a world level not a Melbourne level.
Remorse you are on the right track (so take your success and run with it) and DVP we know will do well, that’s why they WON AHC 2009. To the others, if your feeling the heat then please prove us wrong, bring something we have never seen and rip your chore up… I want Melboune to bring it home that’s why I care.
yeah aweeesome night! my favourites were ellusive detour and vsquad!!
loved there shows! great choreography!

GO THE DREAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Im WAY late as per usual reading this forum but I just saw the comments from DANCER and RJ.
Being very good friends with the Hoopdreamz boys I have the upmost respect for them when it comes to organising this event. I think though the problem is RJ is that a lot of Sydney crews are exposed to a different dance scene to here in Melbourne. Whilst Groove is a great show, and let me tell you the amount of organising done requires a price like that for the tickets (some of these people work @ Hoopdreams and this is their source of income) I will always stand by the price is that way because its a performance. It’s not hip hop. It’s based on the LA style of contempory jazz which commercialism has labelled hip hop. I think those dancers on stage are SO talented but most of them have Sh*T all idea about what hip hop is, where it came from and what it means. Sydney dance events are at a level much different to ours, most of the dance schools work harder on looking at funkstyles and actual hip hop styles. So Dancer, thats why I think a lot of interstate people don’t want to come down…because they know, live and breathe and dance hip hop, they dont have interest in the Contemp Jazz routines most Melbourians love.
Those Groove organisers do it very much for the love and passion, its just different to Sydney.
AND whilst im venting. Can I just say… I think once again that Melbournes warped sense of hip hop is bs. The judges keep giving advice about getting infront of the mirrors yet those who gave hip hop meaning tell us to get away from them..Unless a person can give us a history on hip hop, freestyle and play tracks that are hip hop NOT POP then they have no right to judge competitions like this.
Hi Katja,
Yo please don’t stereotype the Melbourne dance scene. I chorey for Hollabak and am also a popper. I am one of many Melbourne dancers who have knowledge, understanding and appreciation for original Hip Hop styles but partake in the choreographed Hip Hop world. I recently went with DVP United to compete in San Diego and the main classes I attended whilst there was House, Lockin and Party style (with Buddha from Elite Force) (didn’t get a chance to do Poppin’) but I also attended some LA style classes.
If you read Groove’s rules for the comp it clearly references all Hip Hop styles that I just mentioned plus more and even has direct links to to gain further knowledge on these styles. I think ultimately the decision comes down to the dancers across Australia and not just Melbourne. We have people like Arch, Lama, Nomadic Funk, Melbourne Lockers, Melbourne House Dancers, Jigsaw Sneakers, the bboy scene plus more who continue to inspire about original styles. Technically the true style of Hip Hop dance is Breakin’ the rest is funkstyles, party jams, new jack and yes an adaption from the commercial world thanks to video clips etc.
In fact the crew that came and represented Sydney at Australian Hip Hop Champs this year at the finals had amazing dancers who looked like they had stepped out of Justin Timberlake video – J-Town (by the way they were great this is not a diss but merely emphasising that Sydney crews are also influnced by the mainstream LA style).
Suga Pop came down last year and also educated us on what is real hip hop and how loosely the term hip hop is given to other dance styles outside of the originals but at the same time the birthplace of hip hop – the United States has set this standard of referring to choreographed commercial dance to an urban beat as hip hop. Australia has simply followed suit. It really depends on the choregrapher to this style whether it feels like it has a Hip Hop vibe or not. If its choreographed to a Hip Hop song then it is definitley Hip Hop inspired and its foundation has come from the groove and placement of body through the growth of old school party styles and new jack swing. What you would like to call it is up to you. If its not done to a Hip Hop track then yes without a doubt it ain’t Hip Hop because how can you feel the groove, connect to the bass etc?
I also have a strong opnion about Hip Hop dancers who are unable to groove or freestyle as this is the very essence of hip hop itself. I organise many hip hop workshops for young people and they have no sense of what is real hip hop outside of a choreographed presentation. It is up to all of us to gain the right skills to educate the right way. But at the same time it is about freedom of expression and nurturing a scene that is gaining in popularity. Nobody should be attacking anybody. If you feel so strongly about this then nuture the scene with workshops, performances etc. Become a pioneer of the scene with a priority to assist with the knowledge of Hip Hop dance history. Here in Australia we suffer from Tall Poppy Syndrome or get told told dissed “for showing off.” Historically Australia as a whole does not encourage the freedom of expression outside of a standard choreographed world. But we can change this i.e the freestyle session whilst waiting for results at Groove highlights the integral part its importance. It is always in the spotlight of all our Melbourne events.
I also agree with the expectation on the knowledge and ability of a judge to judge hip hop comps. Totally agree.
Like Suga Pop said if it ain’t to a hip hop beat it ain’t hip hop. Let’s continue to educate, teach, inspire and grow the scene. Attacks on other States is simply not cool and not in the spirit of Hip Hop. Something you should already know.
Peace
To Katja;
What a load of bs and generalisation used to differ melb and syd apart. Tsk Tsk!!
